AdaptEar®
FAQs

Does the AdaptEar® work with a Smartphone?

AdaptEar® is designed to control the volume from high power devices like Walkie Talkies and other communication systems. It will reproduce sound from a Smartphone but there may not be enough power to activate the AdaptEar® maximum volume limiter. You can also listen to your Smartphone, whilst simultaneously monitoring a Walkie Talkie or other primary sound source by simply plugging it into the Aux In socket using a stereo 3.5mm mini-jack to mini-jack lead. Adjust the balance using the volume controls on the devices.

If you wish to control the volume or transport controls of your Smartphone using the controls available on suitably equipped earpieces, you will require a 4pole to 4pole mini jack cable. Please contact us for details.

If you want to control sound levels from a Smartphone, please consider our App HearAngel.

Why do I need to adjust the AdaptEar® for it to work?

The large number of earpieces available today have a wide range of impedances and sensitivities. To ensure the best protection, it is essential that you match the AdaptEar® to the earpieces that you use and the time you estimate that you will be exposed for. Setting the unit is a simple process and can be done using the table in the Operating Instructions or by visiting the compatibility page on our web site which has a settings calculator.

What other devices can I use with Adaptear®?

We supply a range of adaptor cables and accessories to let you connect to a wide range of devices. Please contact us and we will be happy to advise you.

What type of fist-mics work with AdaptEar®?

Fist-mics with the standard Motorola 2 pin connector should function with most makes of Walkie Talkie except Kenwood. We have a Kenwood specific fist-mic for use with AdaptEar®. Please contact us for more information.

I haven’t got a suitable fist-mic, where can I get one?

Please contact us and we will be happy to supply one.

Can I use any earpieces?

Yes, if they are fitted with a 3.5mm mini jack. AdaptEar® has been designed to work with earpieces and headphones with sensitivities between 100 and 125 dB/mW and may not give best results with sensitivities outside this range. Please note: earpieces with active-noise-cancellation (ANC) or similar “active” functionality may not work with AdaptEar®, and we are unable to supply calibration data for these types.

Can I use headphones?

Yes, as long as they have a sensitivity between 100 – 125db/mW. You should make sure that they have sufficient enough isolation from ambient noise.

Can I use Acoustic Tube earpieces?

We do not support the use of Acoustic Tube earpieces. They do not provide sufficient ambient noise isolation and we cannot obtain sensitivity data for the speaker units.

What if I don’t know the impedance and sensitivity of my earpieces?

We suggest that you visit the earpiece manufacturer’s website and get the information from there. To ensure the best protection, it is essential that you match the AdaptEar® to the earpieces that you use and the time you estimate that you will be exposed for.

Will AdaptEar® work on aircraft audio systems?

Reports so far from users suggest yes, even though the AdaptEar® wasn’t originally designed for this purpose! AdaptEar® allows you to use your own high quality ear pieces safely with the audio systems on aircraft to watch the in-flight entertainment and preventing the announcement audio generating uncomfortably high volume levels. Connect AdaptEar® to the seat connector with a standard stereo mini jack to mini jack lead (some aircraft may need a 2 pin mono to Mini Jack adaptor commonly available in the duty free area).
